New managers often feel pressure to demonstrate immediate impact. That pressure can lead to quick promises, unnecessary changes and decisions made before the situation is properly understood. A more useful first month balances listening with action.
The purpose of this plan is not to delay responsibility. It is to ensure that early action is based on relevant facts, clear expectations and commitments that can be kept.
Days 1–7: Listen and understand
- Meet each team member and ask what helps or obstructs good work.
- Review current responsibilities, deadlines, standards and unresolved commitments.
- Observe how information moves through the team before changing established routines.
- Confirm what your own manager expects from you and the team.
Days 8–14: Clarify expectations
- Explain priorities, decision boundaries and how progress should be communicated.
- Correct conflicting or unclear instructions.
- Agree on immediate responsibilities and realistic deadlines.
- State how you intend to handle questions, feedback and problems.
Days 15–21: Support responsible action
- Remove one unnecessary obstacle that is affecting useful work.
- Delegate an appropriate responsibility with a clear outcome and review point.
- Give specific recognition for a contribution that supported the team.
- Address one delayed or avoided performance conversation respectfully.
Days 22–30: Review and strengthen
- Check which commitments were completed and which require an honest update.
- Ask the team where your communication has been clear or confusing.
- Review operational results together with recurring relationship or workflow problems.
- Choose two leadership behaviours to practise consistently during the next month.
Use one SHEAF question each day
- Sincerity: Have I been honest about expectations and commitments?
- Helpfulness: Did my support make responsible progress easier?
- Effectiveness: What important action must be completed or communicated?
- Attentiveness: What information or person needs proper attention?
- Friendliness: Did I protect dignity while remaining clear?
What success should look like after 30 days
Team members should understand the immediate priorities, know how to raise a concern and have early evidence that your words and actions agree. You should understand the team’s responsibilities, important obstacles and the management habits you need to strengthen.
The first month will not solve every problem. It should establish a credible way of working together and a practical basis for the months that follow.
